We were never intended to do life alone. Even Our Creator exists in community. We were made to live deeply with one another, to be transparent, to pray for one another, to share our possessions with each other, to suffer and party together, to break for the world together.
Rather than simply calling radius a "church", it is more accurate to describe us as a network of churches or communities. Our communities are clusters of sojourners throughout the city in which communion, community, and mission unfold as a way of life. We believe we will touch upon the needs of the city most when cells of Jesus followers seek to bless specific neighborhoods and environments in which they live.
The Scriptures speak of the power of the good news to holistically change people and even cities such as Ephesus through organic communities like that of Priscilla and Aquila's house church.
We believe people typically find God when they encounter his people. The organic, inclusive community is the context through which we desire to engage with those in need around us.
What's it like to be in a community?
A typical community ranges from 6 to 20 people who establish their own "rhythms" for their experience together. Over the course of a month, a typical community might gather 4 times, each beginning with a communal meal. One week may be focused on Communion with God through elements like spiritual conversation around scripture, prayer, the Lord's Supper, etc. One week may be focused on Mission, involving some movement towards loving the oppressed or marginalized. One week may be centered around intentional Community involving the telling of stories, confession of sin and praying for one another. And one week may just be a big party for the neighborhood. In addition to weekly times of gathering, we encourage spontaneous connection. This is why proximity to each other is critical for community.
What is the relationship between radius and the various communities?
Radius acts as a "Paul" for the communities. If a community leader wishes to join in the network, we will covenant together with God under a common understanding of following Jesus. Radius then equips, encourages, and holds the community leader to the agreed upon DNA. The letters written by Paul to the various churches in the New Testament represent the same nature of interaction that the radius leaders have with the partnering communities. We also network the communities to share our stuff (radius common), offer helpful resources, and join in common mission. Every six weeks all of the community leaders come together for a meal.
How does one go about being put in a community?
One doesn't get "put" in one. To experience community life, we recommend coming to the "Gathering" on Sundays to make natural connections. You can also let the leadership know of your desire and we'll help you connect with people in your niche of the city. You can also simply start one from scratch. The leadership is here to help you. All you have to do is let us know and we'll do everything we can to help you.
We won't just stick you in a group. But we will do everything we can to help you find your way into a community.
How do the communities and the Gathering integrate?
The Gathering is a time and place where the communities come together to celebrate God and hear what He's been doing amongst us. Stories from communities are told and the movements of the communities as a whole shape the content of each Gathering. The Gathering, in turn, refreshes and envisions the communities. Often the Gathering will unite the communities for a common movement (season of Lent, financing wells in Uganda, etc). Right now we only have one weekly Gathering (Sunday evening) but we hope that there will be several gatherings throughout the city in the future.
